Getting Started with EBT Payments

You may be familiar with customers asking you if you are accepting EBT payments. This is common for those businesses that are part of the SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

What is EBT?

EBT stands for electronic benefit transfer. The government uses this mode of payment to distribute benefits to eligible recipients. This makes use of a gift card-like item that machines read to complete a purchase. Scanning starts the transaction processing in North Carolina.

  • Pros:
    • Your business can sell more items because you are allowing customers to pay in another mode.
    • You can address your customers’ needs since you accept EBT payments from beneficiaries of SNAP programs.
  • Cons:
    • Charging sales tax on EBT transactions is not allowed.
    • The processor cannot also charge any interchange fee.

Supporting EBT Transactions

If you decide to accept EBT payments, you will need to gather more information from the FNS or Food and Nutrition Service. An application is necessary. After your application, you will get a SNAP number. You will need to give this number to your payment processor. Your terminals should be accepting PIN-debit transactions for this to go through.
