Getting Started with EBT Payments

Different payment processing solutions in Wilmington, North Carolina are available for businesses. Through these solutions, businesses can offer various options for customers on how they can make their payments.

You may be familiar with customers asking you if you are accepting EBT payments. This is common for those businesses that are part of the SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

What is EBT?

EBT stands for electronic benefit transfer. The government uses this mode of payment to distribute benefits to eligible recipients. This makes use of a gift card-like item that machines read to complete a purchase. Scanning starts the transaction processing in North Carolina.

Businesses Accepting EBT Payments

Not all establishments accept EBT payments. This mode of payment is only available in certain SNAP locations. In most cases, these are establishments such as:

  • Supermarkets
  • Grocery stores
  • Bakeries
  • Farmers Markets

However, this will depend on the regulations within the state or locality. The eligibility of customers who can use EBT at SNAP locations also depends on income and other factors. Eligible customers cannot use EBT to buy anything they want. It is typically limited to the purchase of food and other related products.

Pros vs. Cons: Accepting EBT Payments

There are several pros and cons you need to consider in terms of accepting EBT payments as one of your business’ cash management solutions.

  • Pros:
    • Your business can sell more items because you are allowing customers to pay in another mode.
    • You can address your customers’ needs since you accept EBT payments from beneficiaries of SNAP programs.
  • Cons:
    • Charging sales tax on EBT transactions is not allowed.
    • The processor cannot also charge any interchange fee.

Supporting EBT Transactions

If you decide to accept EBT payments, you will need to gather more information from the FNS or Food and Nutrition Service. An application is necessary. After your application, you will get a SNAP number. You will need to give this number to your payment processor. Your terminals should be accepting PIN-debit transactions for this to go through.

TESTIMONIALS

  • I was previously with a national card processor. I thought I had received the absolute best rate and terms. That is until I met Kyle and his wife in my store one day. He was not pushy or high-pressured but said he would be more than happy to review my plan that I had just signed on to. Not only did he beat my 'best' rate from the national company, he offered me personal, local customer service you just can't get anywhere else. Although this is professional company, I truly was made to feel like I was part of the family. From day one, Kyle and his father made sure that every question I had was quickly and properly answered. They went out of their way to make me feel like I was their best customer. I will recommend this company to anyone at any time. If you have a question, feel free to message me. I believe these guys to be the best in the business and look forward to many years of a satisfying business relationship with them. Thanks Infinity! Lou's Flower World
  • It is refreshing to do business with a local, family-owned and operated company that is honest. Payment processing is sadly an industry full of scam artists and Thomas and his team at Infinity are incredibly honest and affordable with several options for small and large businesses. Thank you for your help! Carolina Commercial Properties
  • I could not be happier. Infinity essentially cut my merchant fees in HALF, and showed me clearly how I was being cheated by the cc processing firm I *had been sold to*. Next day deposits, great customer service and support, local business - what's not to like?? DogTrain
